Remembering the animals of war.  Murphy’s Army Purple Poppy Campaign Information Sheet 15 features PDSA Medal Winner Crumstone Irma.

German Shepherd Irma and her kennel mate Psyche were initially trained as messenger dogs, relaying important information when other communication lines were down. They were retrained for search and rescue duties, handled by their owner Mrs Margaret Griffin.

Serving with the London Civil Defence Service Irma was able to locate bodies beneath the rubble, indicating whether they were alive or deceased. Together Irma and Psyche found 233 people, twenty-one of whom were alive….
