Remembering the animals of war.  Murphy’s Army Purple Poppy Campaign Information Sheet 14 features PDSA Dickin Medal Winner Jet of Iada.  Jet was a black pedigree German Shepherd Dog born in Liverpool.  At a very young age he was sent to the War Dogs school in Gloucester where he learnt anti-sabotage and search and rescue duties.

Jet and his handler Corporal Wardle were transferred to London, serving with the Civil Defence Service.  It was there, during the Blitz, that Jet was accredited with locating some 150  people trapped beneath collapsed buildings, many of whose lives he saved.

He was awarded the PDSA Dickin Medal in 1945 “For being responsible for the rescue of persons trapped under blitzed buildings while serving with the Civil Defence Services of    London”….
